What is the main purpose of the Foundations Intensive?

The goal of our Sex Addiction Foundations is two fold: Building a solid foundation of recovery and understanding the impact of the addiction on your partner.

To accomplish a recovery foundation, we will use resources such as Facing the Shadow as well as our own resources  that we have developed over the years. In addition, we will help you understand the traumatic impact of  sex addiction on your partner, and how you can begin the process of relational restoration.

Who is a good fit for the Foundations Intensive?

Our Foundations Intensive is especially suited for those at the beginning of their recovery journey and in the beginning phases of relational healing after discovery and/or disclosure. It helps to kick start this process and establish a strong base from which to heal.

That said, we’ve also found this intensive very helpful for those who may have been in recovery for a while, but who  are needing to re-establish a strong foundation. This may be due to relapse or because they never built a strong foundation at the start.

What will be Covered in the Intensive?

Some topics will vary based on the needs of the participants, but topics we typically cover include:

  • Understanding compulsive sexual behaviors
  • Establishing a solid circle plan
  • Expanding the circle plan to include relational healing
  • Identifying patterns of distorted thinking and their consequences
  • Exploring the cycle of sexual acting out and building a recovery and restoration cycle
  • Examining pain and peace cycles, and how to better restore relationships
  • Identifying patterns from family of origin through timeline and genogram
  • Building tools for managing distressing emotions
  • Identifying core beliefs
  • Exploring maladaptive coping strategies, as well as power and control dynamics exercised in relationships
  • Identifying arousal template and influence on addictive behaviors
  • Clarifying the relational impact of addictive behaviors
  • Healing from shame/guilt
  • Establishing new patterns of healthy communication
  • Building relapse prevention strategies
  • Focusing on aftercare – Building a solid program of recovery
  • Creating a vision for the future
  • Enacting the plan moving forward

Why do this intensive instead of regular outpatient therapy?

We recognize that not everyone will need an intensive like this, but we do believe that everyone could benefit from it.  We will be packing 30 hours of focused content intothe intensive,  with individualized focused care.  We’ve found that an intensive format is a really good way to focus on important foundational content to building a solid recovery base and to begin the process of relational healing. In fact, we’ve found that what we can cover in a few days would be similar to what you could cover in around a year of once weekly individual therapy.  This format really helps you focus on building a solid recovery base, and also helps you to begin healing the rupture in your relationship.

What about my responsibilities with my job and family?

We work to find the best time frames for those attending our intensives. We try to work around work schedules as much as possible. For that reason, we often schedule our Foundations intensives from Fridays-Mondays. We account for the needs of your schedule to make our program work for you and for your family.
